Opern Air at the Wiener Staatsoper
On September 7, 2025, the Vienna State Opera presented its first ever open-air gala concert, Opern Air, in the Burggarten. The event marked the 80th anniversary of the destruction of the Opera House in 1945 and the 70th anniversary of its reopening in 1955. Conducted by Bertrand de Billy, the evening brought together some of the greatest names in opera, including Elīna Garanča, Jonas Kaufmann, Sonya Yoncheva, Benjamin Bernheim, and Boris Pinkhasovich, alongside the Vienna State Opera Orchestra and Chorus.

Among the highlights was the performance of Mozart’s trio Soave sia il vento from Così fan tutte, sung by Opera Studio members Andrei Maksimov, Anita Monserrat, and Hanna-Theres Weigl. In just two and a half minutes, Mozart’s music created a moment of perfect harmony—an atmosphere both intimate and expansive, reaching the thousands gathered in the Burggarten, the audiences watching live on ORF III, and viewers around the world via livestream.

Andrei is a versatile musician and composer whose chamber vocal and instrumental works have been performed extensively across Europe, often featuring him as a performer. In April 2023, his opera Barabbas, set to an original libretto by Vladimir Alkhovik and translated into English by Helen Daniels, premiered at the Biel Volkshaus in Switzerland, performed by the Swiss Opera Studio. The opera explores themes of redemption and moral conflict, further establishing Andrei’s voice in contemporary music.

2024 saw the premieres of two vocal cycles: Catalan Melodies, for soprano and violin to poems by Clementina Arderiu, debuted in Bern and was later recorded in Strasbourg; and Another Song of February, for soprano and baritone to texts by Boris Pasternak, premiered in Hamburg. Both works highlight Andrei’s ability to bring poetry to life through music.

Andrei’s upcoming oratorio Poets, scheduled for the 2025–26 season, explores themes of war and love with a libretto based on the poetry of Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon, featuring a central love duet between the two poets.
